Atari 2600

This marked the beginning of my gaming life. I can still recall that fateful day when my mum brought me to Lucky Plaza and bought an Atari 2600. Of course, I had no idea what that device was supposed to do, but once it was set up at home I just couldn’t get my hands off it!

Quite a few cartridges were bought and it was a great source of entertainment. It served my family well until it was called into retirement when we purchased an NES.

Java Certifications

My ex-company sponsored my certifications for the SCJP and the SCWCD (Sun Certified Java Programmer and Sun Certified Web Component Developer) as there was a government scheme called CITREP that allowed for them to claim the costs of the course. However, to get the maximum rebate, I had to pass the exams!

The exams were not exactly a piece of cake as many of the questions required thinking like a compiler! I had to spend lotsa lotsa time studying just to pass these exams…

The airfield

There was this guy in class who was prone to profanities — let’s call him “A”.

One day, it turned out that he was trying to be a good boy and paying attention in class while the rest of us were horsing around. We actually created a paper plane out of the centerspread of a newspaper and flew it during geography class!

“A” was incensed and he shouted, “Hey! You think this place is an airfield?” Unfortunately for him, the teacher thought he said “‘F’ You!” instead of “airfield”, so he ended up having some explaining to do…

Blue Boots

Back in kindergarten, I had this pair of blue boots that my mum bought for me that I really liked. Think I liked it because it was a special kind of footwear that could only worn when it was raining. Unfortunately, I think I grew out of it pretty fast because I don’t remember many rainy days, and I also don’t recall wearing it very often.

Maybe I would be rich and famous now if my mum had bought me yellow boots instead…

Mismanaged Portfolio

This actually happened to me quite a while back but it should serve as a lesson for managing your own investment portfolio.

Although “buy and hold” is a viable investment strategy, it does not mean that you can just “buy and forget about it”. After a loooong time, I decided to take a look at my stock portfolio and I was wondering why I could not find any prices for some of my stocks!

I thought I was the victim of some scam or maybe the company had gone bankrupt! Thankfully, that was not the case. After digging through filings with the SGX, I found out that some companies had changed their names, some were privatised and delisted (I had already received the payoff and I didn’t realise it!). So please, take an active interest in your investment portfolio even if you are a person who buys and holds…

Loss of Speed

I was a school sprinter during my Primary and Secondary School days, however I went into a long hiatus due to injuries and disinterest in running circles around the track.

I was dismayed when I went for sprint relay selections in Uni and I found that I had lost my speed… However, I can run much longer distances nowadays. Perhaps there was a tradeoff?…
