Saturday ball game

A bunch of my classmates, YL, IW, LFW, etc. used to get together every Saturday at the CPE (College of Physical Education) to play basketball. After hours of sweating it out in the morning, we would adjourn to the nearby A&W’s and indulge in some fried chicken. I remember once we even went to Serene Centre to gorge on cheeseburgers — think there was a $1 cheeseburger promo that Macs ran back then…

Balls Story

In Primary School, I was called on to stand on the stage quite a few times. It was not because of any particular talent in the performing arts, but for my standout talent in being a nuisance in school (to the prefects and teachers)

Me and my classmates liked to play on the bleachers near the school compound, and we often had a game of football using one of those miniature foam soccer balls. In our fits of enthusiasm, we would often kick the ball hard and it would end up stuck on a slope. I would climb up the slope to retrieve the ball (since it was mine), and I would always promptly get caught by any prefects passing by as I was considered to be performing a dangerous act (by climbing a small slope???)

So once I got hauled up, I would be put up on stage as an exhibit to the other students. I thought it was an honour to be recognised to have the balls to retrieve my ball.

Retreat at Sentosa

Shortly after working in my first job, me and some other newbies were assigned by the HOD to make arrangements for the department retreat at Sentosa. As it turned out, the company had some chalets available for use at Sentosa, and all we had to do was to inform HR.

It was quite fun to take time off from work to go to Sentosa to make arrangements and set things up for the retreat. Although it was still considered “work”, it was nevertheless more fun!

Those days of such staff benefits are long gone. A year or two after the retreat, the chalets were all returned to Sentosa.

Lenovo Power Manager Memory Hog

Not sure if this is a unique problem, but I’m experiencing issues with the Lenovo Power Manager where it can consume memory in excess of 100MB! I’m quite sure there must be a memory leak somewhere as it is inconceivable that a mere power manager can take up so much RAM!

Anyway, what I did to resolve it was to kill the rundll32.exe that was running the memory manager and restarted it. The command-line to start it up is:

“C:WINDOWSsystem32rundll32.exe” C:PROGRA~1ThinkPadUTILIT~1PWRMGRTR.DLL,PwrMgrBkGndMonitor

Jpg Program Problem

Back in University we were all supposed to work on this JPEG encoder/decoder program that could compress an image using a JPEG algorithm that we had to write ourselves.

I normally do not need help with my programs, but this very one time, no matter how much time I spent, I just couldn’t get it right. I tried till it was just minutes before the deadline and I had no choice but to get some serious help from LJ.

Thanks LJ! Never forgot that save…

Cost Plus Adventure

In the past, there was this cheap electronics shop called “Cost Plus” that sold all manners of gadgets at cheap prices. There was a branch at Holland Village, but a “mega-shop” located at Scotts Shopping Centre. When I was in Primary School, I loved to read their ads in the papers and occassionally I would spend my hard-earned money on some gadgets (walkie-talkies, key-chain with whistle-activated alarm, etc.)

One fine day, I decided to venture to the Scotts Shopping Centre branch in the morning (I was in the afternoon session) without informing anyone. I took the bus 200 down to Scotts and had a heavenly morning in Scotts surrounded by gadgets.

Satisfied, I took 200 back home, but as it went back by a different route, I panicked and alighted at the Redhill MRT station bus-stop, thinking I was lost and in deep trouble. Thankfully, on the next 200 that arrived, the bus driver was nice enough to tell me that the bus will eventually wind its way to my home’s bus stop. Whew!

(Accidental) Snail Murderer

The kindergarten I attended (Dan and HG, you know which one) had this grass patch outside that somehow had a healthy population of snails. It was quite disgusting because sometimes when we were running around, there would be a “CRRRUUUNCH!!” sound and we would realise that we had accidentally killed another snail. Think its worse when you skid slightly after stepping on one…

Biz trip to India

Trip to Bangalore was indeed an eye-opener! The way that the drivers understood each other was absolutely amazing. The traffic seemed to be in a perpetual of near-misses between vehicles, but everything ends up ok.

What I couldn’t believe when I got back was people telling me that the traffic was even worse in Mumbai! I suppose that will be something I have to see for myself.
