The BBQ Party@Josh’s

There was once when there was a class party held at Josh’s home. Think the parents probably made a big mistake because they probably didn’t expect how we would behave.

It was a BBQ at the balcony, and we all really enjoyed ourselves. So far in my life, I think that was probably one of the most fun BBQs I’ve had. I can still remember how yummy the beef strips were. It was probably the first time that I had moderately rare beef, but the seasoning was excellent!

We never ever got a party at Josh’s place again. Probably because we created a super big mess in the hall when we left footprints all over the place whenever we walked from the balcony to the kitchen or the toilet…

Man U triumph over Bayern for Champ’s League 1999

This was probably one of the sweetest memories that I had for Man U football. I was staying in a holiday flat with Esh and we (or rather I) woke up in the middle of the night to catch the match live.

If you are a footie fan, you should already know that Man U had lost its talismanic captain, Roy Keane, to suspension, and Bayern had the impenetrable Oliver Khan in goal. It seemed like a lost cause, especially when Man U were down by a goal with minutes of the game left to play.

Who would have thought that Man U would turn the game around in a matter of minutes and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat through 2 goals via Sheringham and Solskjaer? That was a feeling of pure exhiliration, although Esh did feel a bit sorry for the Bayern players as they cried on the pitch.

Water Bottle Test

When I was in Primary 3, my mum had just bought me a new water bottle and I wanted to impress my friends on the (unproven) durability of my water bottle. So I got their attention and I dropped the water bottle to the ground.

Needless to say, it crashed to the floor and broke into pieces, releasing water on the classroom floor. The incident resulted in a destroyed water bottle but it also created a memory for AJ, who was seated beside me.

The kindergarten concert no-show

On the day when there was to be a kindergarten concert, my parents brought me to the hawker centre near “Kim To” for dinner. However, the timing was a bit off and we had to rush for the concert as I had to perform with my class.

We arrived slightly late and by the time we rushed to backstage, the entire class was already assembled on stage. I didn’t feel ready to perform so I just decided not to go on stage.

Seletar Reservoir Phototaking

One of the earliest memories I have is of my parents bringing me and my sister down to Seletar Reservoir for a photo-taking session. I can actually recall running around the place although nothing special at all happened that day. It was just a normal family outing.

It’s amazing how seemingly insignificant events like this — in the adult’s perspective — can actually somehow leave an impact on a child’s memory. I hope I can keep this in mind as I bring up my baby daughter. Something that is i think is seemingly insignificant may leave a deep imprint on her life somehow…

The case of rice weevils

When I was young I was always fascinated by rice weevils, otherwise known as “bee gus”. Being the curious sort, I caught a few from the sack of rice and kept them in a clear case that used to contain Hello Kitty chops (They belonged to my sis. Really!). Of course, being the humanitarian sort, I also left some rice inside.

As you know, children have very short attention spans, and I was no different. I promptly forgot about my collection of rice weevils until months later. I chanced upon it again and I was shocked to find that the rice weevils were still alive, but most of the rice had already been turned into some sort of powder. Cool…

BTW, around that age, I also did some experiments on rice weevils by keeping them in the freezer for longer and longer periods of time to see how long they could withstand the cold. They’re pretty resilient and go into some sort of hibernate mode when you take them out from the freezer. After warming up for a while, they would start moving again.
